A Wine That Jumps Through Hoops

January 30, 2008
I’ve been thinking about Richard Knerr lately.  With his recent passing we’ve lost the man behind the hula-hoop, and other popular kids products from his company, Wham-O.  Knerr and his toys brought the world a lot of fun.

Hudsucker_proxy_2 But mostly, I’ve been wondering how he came up with his ideas.  Of course the great movie "The Hudsucker Proxy" promulgated one version of the creation story for an early Knerr product – the hula-hoop.  According to the movie, the hula-hoop was created by Norville Barnes, the movie’s lead character, after being inspired by the ring left by his coffee cup on a page of classified ads.  Perhaps the powerful coffee lobby got hold of the Coen brothers as they were writing the movie, or perhaps there simply were no wine bars in the 1950′s, but I tend to think wine is a better source of inspiration than is coffee.

The java jolt is a great way to start a day, to attack those things requiring energy and drive.  But fresh ideas don’t come to me at those times, preferring to enter my mind when it’s less crowded by to-do lists.  When there is time for contemplation.  And what do you think is more conducive to inspiration at such times – the calming affect of wine or the jolting affect of coffee?  I Lucent mean, was anybody else jealous about the hefty fee paid to the creative agency who designed the Lucent logo?  Clearly inspired by the tell-tale trace of a wine glass, likely during the agency’s initial celebration after winning the account, then revived weeks later after countless billable hours of "testing" other ideas.  Yeah, wine is your drink for inspiration, not coffee.

Wines recommended for their contemplation-enhancing abilities.  Wines that will jump through hoops when you need a new idea, even if it’s just finding a new way to tell someone "I love you" in a couple of weeks…

Logo Roessler Cellars, 2003 Pinot Noir, Pisoni Vineyard $60 – As I wrote my initial notes on this wine, I had a Mozart symphony playing. The BEST way to listen to Mozart is to close your eyes and do nothing but listen, to let the music take you where it will. And the best way to enjoy this wine is to close your eyes after each sip, letting the wine take you where it will.  A little bottle age has produced hints of wonderful things to come, as the bottle bouquet is just beginning to develop its ultimate reward.

Syrah_garys_vineyard_2Arcadian Winery, 2001 Syrah "Garys’ Vineyard" $50 Winemaker/Owner Joe Davis feels this vintage was among the best he’s experienced in 21 years of winemaking. Using just over a ton of grapes per acre (or about one cluster for every two vine shoots!), Joe’s meticulous grape "triage" pays off in the glass, producing a most distinctive Syrah.  Arcadian makes some of the most elegant and feminine wines the Central Coast has to offer, with enough "stuffing" from his ripe fruit to reward those who favor big wines.  Layers of evolving flavors to enjoy!

Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. Seriously

Bubble_wrap January 28th, 2008

I kid thee not.  Today is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day.  Whether this is an online spoof (and if so, it’s well organized) or an actual appreciation day voted on by our hard-working representatives, I’m not sure.  Either way, one wonders why such a common, 50 year-old product deserves its own day.  The industry insists this day is recognized "around the world".  Bet you’ve never heard of it before now though, unless you’re a stockholder.

Although it has brought hours of obnoxious fun to several generations, and having spawned more than one weird product idea (see bubble wrap bikini, bubble wrap pants, and some hilarious competitions to come up with product extensions), why in the world would our nation take pause to honor such a thing?

Play the online bubble wrap popping game here

And why in the world would a wine merchant’s blog spend any time on such a thing?  As usual, in my warped mind, all roads lead to wine, eventually.  You see, bubble wrap has saved many a shipped bottle from meeting an untimely demise.  And when I’m shipping wines like this one, below, it’s comforting to know it will be shipped in good, protective covering.  Besides, there is no Styrofoam appreciation day.

  • "92-94 points" Wine Advocate. "Once again, the superstar of this group is the 2005 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard, which offers more of everything – fragrance, fruit, body, nuance, and nobility." Robert Parker
  • 92 points, Wine Spectator. "Fragrant and delicate, with subtle intensity that builds on the palate, showing a deft balance between earthy-minerally raspberry and blackberry fruit that gains momentum on the finish. Drink now through 2011. 552 cases produced." James Laube

Au Bon Climat 2005 Pinot Noir, "Isabelle"

Isabelle200 Top 100 Wines of 2007 (S.F. Chronicle)

Of all the wine reviewing publications, the Chronicle seems to be most closely aligned with my own palate.  Adventurous when it comes to trying obscure wines from new places, yet appreciative of the classics.

The Au Bon Climat 2005 "Isabelle" ($50) is one such classic.  So when this made their list of top 100 wines of 2007, I was not surprised.  This is a great wine, and which will make your next special occasion even more special.

A wine so good it brings tears to your eyes. Campaign trail wine!

I think I’ve stumbled upon an idea so brilliant, it may change the course of my career.  "Political Consultant", here I come.

Hillary A quick Googling of "Hillary Tears" turns up over 500,000 hits on last week’s tearful coffeeshop stop in New Hampshire.  And since seven seconds of real emotion was all it took for HRC to win the New Hampshire primary, other candidates with dead cat personalities (ahem, Mr. Romney) must surely be eager to disprove rumors about their own tin hearts.  Forget the 24-hour cry-a-thons on public access T.V., these candidates need real tears.  And that’s where my idea comes in.

You see, in a few short weeks the remaining candidates descend upon those of us in the great state of California.  And this is wine country (as you may have heard) with the highest annual per-capita consumption rate in the country, and one that rivals most of Europe.  Wine is near and dear to the heart of many a Californian.

So I am offering complimentary wine advisory services to any candidate who wants a wine so good it will bring tears to their eyes.  I ask for no compensation.  It is my patriotic duty.  Though I will ask each candidate to turn the bottle so my logo shows as the cameras zoom in on their watery ducts.

But what happens once all the candidates are caught showing a rare glimpse of tearful humaOrgasm060906_228x403nity?   Then the playing field is level once again.  That’s when a good political consultant must be prepared to move things to the next level.  So to each candidate I say "bring out the checkbooks" and I’ll recommend a wine so good one sip will inspire a re-enactment of young Meg Ryan’s coffee shop scene in "When Harry Met Sally."

Um, wait a minute.  Come to think of it, I don’t think the electorate would care to see either Hillary OR Mit reveal their humanity at that level.  Still, one does wonder if it might be worth it, just to see John Stewart’s reaction.

Speaking of wines to bring tears to your eyes… right now I’m enjoying a William Jame’s Cellars pinot noir from the Garey’s Ranch Vineyard.  You’ll be hearing more about this wine in the near future.  Until I can make this wine available to you, you may want to begin practicing the scene you see at right…

Spotlight on Lane Tanner – Vintage 2006

Laneplain2r2c1January 7th, 2008
Decades ago, I learned of Lane Tanner through her wines.  They are beautiful, elegant and feminine wines intended for the ages.

More recently I learned of her equally famous reputation as an unabashed character!  Her photo here – submerged in a grape bin, and wearing no more than a dry-iced mist – is but one indication of her eagerness to eschew all things pretentious and snooty.  This photo is the home page for her website, by the way – good on ya, Lane!

Lane the Iconoclast
My first meeting with her did nothing to prove or disprove her reputation, unless you consider her wine-colored Jaguar.  Still, I continued to hear tall tales, and was impishly eager to raise them with her during our interview almost a year ago.  I was not disappointed.

But words can only convey part of her story so I recommend watching this video clip from her recent interview with NBC news.  It’s good, as far as it goes, but the full Lane Tanner doesn’t come to the fore until she is under the spotlight, signing bottles, beaming, talking to customers, and sharing a sip or three of wine – such as the night she was the celebrity guest at the Tastes of the Valleys wine shop and tasting bar, where her wines are always available for tasting.

Lane’s Winemaking Style
Lane recently released her 2006 vintage, and though her prices are creeping upward, her wines are still remarkably affordable.  Here are my "Cliffs Notes" summary on Lane’s wines:

  • Elegantly "perfumed" wines
  • Delightfully moderate alcohol
  • Great acidity – they really bloom when paired with food
  • Age nicely for 5-10 years.  I was recently thrilled by her 1986 pinot!

In keeping with my numerous postings about closures (Taber Interview, Reduction and glass closures, Glass Closures Expand, and book review "To Cork or not to Cork") I must dedicate some space to Lane’s iconoclastic choice.  After losing a ruinously high percentage (11%!) of her 1997 vintage to tainted corks, Lane demanded remuneration from the cork provider.  She had a policy of purchasing only the best quality, 2-inch wine corks available, and believed the company who provided the faulty corks would make good.  She was told, in no uncertain terms "No we won’t reimburse you and feel free to sue us – nobody has ever won a cork taint case."

She vowed right then to find an acceptable alternative to cork.  Concerned about the possibility of reduction from air-tight closures such as screwcaps and glass T-Tops (still open to debate, by the way) when used in long aging trials, Lane wanted a solution that allowed her wines to age JUST AS IF they were under a cork finish.  She found one – a synthetic cork called "NeoCork" that allows the wine to breathe at the same microscopic rate as a true cork, but with no risk of cork taint.  In addition, she found that NeoCork had none of the removal difficulties inherent with most "synthetic corks" – no more broken corkscrews.  She has been an avid supporter of this alternative closure since 1998, and believes her wines age beautifully well under this new closure.

2006pnsbco2006 Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County $26
This wine offers a bargain-level introduction to Lane’s pinots.  I suspect it serves as a missionary, creating converts for her "pricier" wines (which are still bargains, relative to most pinots).  Lane describes it as her "working girl" wine, as it makes a great everyday wine when you want to make everyday a little special.  From a lush vintage, this is an inviting wine.

2006syrah_frenchcamp2006 Syrah, French Camp Vineyard $23
They say it is difficult to tell what instrument is playing if a note’s first few nanoseconds are removed from the recording.  Apparently, each instrument’s "attack" on a note contains the majority of the clues needed for our ear to determine instrument variation.  In much the same vein, hide the label on this elegant syrah and see how often it is mistaken for a pinot.  This wine is considerably different than its bold and brawny brethren – syrahs that fit our contemporary definition of "goodness".  But it would be a shame to miss this gem simply because it doesn’t fit the usual syrah mold.  Pair it with the usual suspects for pinot, and affordable happiness is but a corkscrew away.

2006pnbiennacido2006 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido Vineyard $33
The Bien Nacido Vineyard is perhaps the most famous of Central Coast vineyards, providing the fruit behind many of our nation’s award-winning wines.  The fruit in this particular wine, however, is from vines that are 25 years old – low-yielding vines producing grapes with great flavor concentration.  In the day when similar pinots are selling at $35 – $45, this is an excellent candidate for your cellar, to be opened in 7 or 10 years and slowly savored as the wine evolves in your glass.

2006pn_julias2006 Pinot Noir, Julia’s Vineyard $36
This is the top end of Lane’s small portfolio.  And while my palate leans slightly toward her Bien Nacido pinot, I would not be disappointed to find a case of this on my proverbial desert island.  The Robb Report sums up all of Lane’s wines in its review of her Julia’s Vineyard pinot – "This Pinot achieves what few Pinot Noirs do: Marrying the forceful fruit of California with the more delicate mold, mushroom and earth essences we associate with grand crus of Burgundy." Try a bottle of this wine and compare it to the Bien Nacido, then let us know what you think.
